This song is not only part of the “plaza” series of Sally songs, but also an alternate version of “plaza Blue age”, from Sally’s 2011 album

Compared to the original lyrics of plaza Blue age (note the difference in capitalization too) I feel as if this is a kind of “B-side” reflection on Miko’s becoming a shikaisen. There’s a sense of gravity here compared to the preachiness of the original…

Might come back and revisit this translation later, but one thing’s for sure:
The journey of conveying Shuriken’s lyrics is a fun one.

notes:

  • I chose to use mostly “we/us” pronouns (except for the end stanza) as an interpretation of Miko’s magnanimous, royal style–but, perhaps more importantly, the lyrics give me the sense of the kinds of lengths not only Miko herself goes to, but also her allies.
  • “yogoto mukaeru… yoi to shite” – in plaza Blue age, this set of lines is exactly the same, EXCEPT for the question mark. Barring the possibility of the lyrics source I used being mistranscribed… it has the sense of the narrator experiencing doubt or questioning what they are doing. (i.e., “Am I to come across this throat-breaking melody EVERY NIGHT?” — as if questioning whether it’s a worthy price to pay for defying death.)

Lyrics:

kimi wa izuko no tsuki wo miteita
nidome wo shiru doushi yo kotoba wo tsutsushime
ai hanare domo namida wa oyoshi
yozora wo kirau tori wo shitashimu kono hi no shuuen

Where is the moon that has drawn your gaze?
O friends, once more, this we shall know of:
Mind the language with which you speak!
Though you have parted with your love, please cease your tears;
As we become familiar with those birds who loathe the nighttime sky,
The demise of today is upon us.

tabiji wa hajimari to owari no aida de
utakata makura wo tsuyu ni nurasu
sashizume egataki mono to iu tokoro ka
wazuka na kawaki wo uruosu dake

Between beginning and end, the journey lies therein:
Our transient cushioning shall become wet with dew.
For those things deemed valuable and rare
Can only sate but a drop of your thirst.

(bouto he kashita kokoro ga itanda)
yakeru you ni suberi-ochiteyuku
(afureta sono shizuku wa nani darou)

(That strength we lent towards rebellion has brought us pain.)
It feels burning hot as they’re sliding off, trickling down:
(Just what are those water drops overflowing from me…?)

tomadoi no douka tachi noboru shiro doku
ryouhou de ranbu suru hikari no wa
oide oide to te wo maneku to konai asu wo
handou-en meguru mukui no sougi

White-poison smoke rises upwards from this burning lamp of disorientation;
Its ring of light wildly dances back and forth between two sides.

“Come to us!” we beckon, gesturing to the unanswering morning;
This cyclical funeral service of reward and punishment
Forms the flat circle of karmic retribution.

kazakami yori tayori ga senri wo wataru
sadame ni aragai kireru no ka to

The wind blows in from somewhere far, far away–
Bearing the words, “Will you defy in full-force the laws of fate itself?”

(eda saki ni musubareta sore to wa)
tane wo maki sodachi wo matsu nagi
(taosareta shikabane wa dare darou)

(They were branches connected at their tips,)
Now waiting in the calm waters for the blooming of seeds they have sown;
(Just who are those corpses sent beneath the ground?)

araburu chinou ga azakeri no koe wo tatsu
mou yose kizu wo saki hiraku no wa
yogoto mukaeru? nodo wo oru hodo no merodi
raise ni hirei wo wabite mo yoi to shite

With savage minds we deafen those voices that laugh with scorn;
Enough of it! No more opening our cuts and gashes!

Shall this melody be sung every night to the point it breaks our throats,
Permitting us to apologize for our insolence towards the afterlife?

– sakarau koto naki you amida ni maware kobito ya –

— Come, children, and gather around Buddha, so that you won’t be defiant! —

kimi wa izuko no tsuki wo miteita
nanto orokashii ka mabuta ga kiokure
ima wakare you namida wa oyoshi
sugata kawaru nomi yo ki-najimu koromo wo sute

Where is the moon that has drawn your gaze?
How foolish you are, your eyelids trembling in hesitance!
Let us part ways now, and please cease your tears.
Only the outer shell shall change as we
Cast our overworn clothing away.

(sangeki no ichi-maku kara nagame you)
touge oku ni ito kibou ga haeru
(yuzuranai no hoka ni nani ga aru)

(From this tragic one-act story,)
Let us bear witness to the depth of its climax,
Where there is a hope shining radiantly.
(Unyielding, not to surrender. What else could it be?)

takitsuketa no wa mizukara no i ni omou
kyoukou de sekitomerarete mo nagare
chuugi yuganda kono mi tote i ni kaisazu ni
oi douke utagoe wa naku bakari

I think of how I feel about having incited that fire;
Even pushed back behind a dam, those feelings flow forth.
As this body is distorted by such devotion…
How foolish it is to pay no mind,
And do nothing but sing.
