The only english translation (that I know of) that exists of this song has a few errors in it (nothing ground breaking, but it does change the meaning of the lyrics), so I would like to offer my own…..
(2024 edit: I’ve updated the lyrics a little to better convey some of the imagery)
General notes that struck me about this piece:
- “The darkness” seems like both a character in the lyrics as much as it is a way of describing the narrator’s state of mind. There’s no distinct narrator per se; the lyrics are kind of more vaguely descriptive of things that happen, kind of like a montage of random things strung together, not tied to any person or thing but to each
other.
- And so I tried to keep the verb tenses consistent with how they are in the lyrics so that it’s clearer to make distinctions between where narration begins and ends. The feeling of the song is kind of impersonal overall, which is a little hard to convey in English, so I went with using the third person where I felt I needed to refer to a specific “character”
- * update – I’ve revisited some of this after a few years; I think the lyrics can be seen as narration between the speaker and a person/body that she’s mutilated–but intentionally ambiguous so as to suggest it may be herself that she’s destroying
- I interpret the English lines (“This all for you is wave or gun…”) as part aesthetic, partial reinforcement of this imagery of flandre surrounded in these deadly bullet patterns and coming apart “bit by bit.”
